SAEDNEWS: Iran, China, Russia and 12 Other Nations Warn Against Attacks on Peaceful Nuclear Facilities
According to Saednews, Fifteen countries have called for a clear and firm international stance against any attack or threat targeting nuclear facilities, stressing the importance of protecting peaceful nuclear activities and maintaining confidence in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) safeguards system.
The call was made in a joint statement issued on Thursday during the 70th General Conference of the IAEA. The statement was endorsed by Belarus, Brazil, Burkina Faso, China, Cuba, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Nicaragua, Niger, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, Tajikistan and Zimbabwe.
The countries emphasized that attacks or threats against nuclear facilities operating under IAEA safeguards should be met with a strong and unified international response. They urged all IAEA member states to work together to protect peaceful nuclear activities and uphold the credibility of the Agency’s safeguards framework.
The statement also warned that remaining silent when safeguarded nuclear facilities come under attack could undermine established international norms and weaken the international legal order.
According to the 15 countries, a lack of a firm response could also contribute to the normalization of actions that pose risks to nuclear safety, security and the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
The countries therefore stressed the importance of maintaining international unity and reaffirming existing principles governing the protection of nuclear facilities and peaceful nuclear cooperation.
