Araghchi Says Global Trust in the US Financial System Is Declining

According to Saednews, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticized U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, accusing him of openly seeking to weaken Iran’s economy. Araghchi argued that, instead, the United States is facing growing pressure on its own financial system as international confidence in the U.S. financial order declines.

Araghchi made the remarks on Friday evening while accompanying Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, India. In a post on X, he warned that the rising cost of financing U.S. government debt could mark only the beginning of a broader financial crisis.

He also shared an image of Bessent alongside a graph depicting mounting pressure on the U.S. bond market.

The war between the United States and Iran has added further strain to the Treasury market, while yields on U.S. government bonds have climbed amid historically large budget deficits. The federal deficit is currently estimated at roughly 6% of U.S. GDP.
