The action was carried out after the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) attacked a Cyprus-flagged container ship while it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The ship caught fire and suffered major damage to its engine room, leaving it unable to continue its voyage. The U.S. military said that one civilian crew member is still missing.
A U.S. official told Axios that the strikes targeted radar facilities, missile and drone storage sites, and related launch systems.
