SAEDNEWS: The Prime Minister of Canada said early on Friday that he is seeking to restore diplomatic relations with Iran. Meanwhile, CBC reported that Ottawa is also planning to resume diplomatic ties with Iran.
According to a political news service report from Saed News Agency, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said early Friday morning (Tehran time) that Canada should reopen its diplomatic missions in Iran and Venezuela.
He emphasized that “engagement does not mean endorsement,” stressing that maintaining embassies and consular services in a country does not imply approval of that country’s policies.
Canada severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012 under pressure from the United States and the Israeli government.
Carney added that Canada has been “in a position of weakness” in relation to countries such as Iran where it lacks diplomatic presence.
Meanwhile, CBC reported that it had heard indications Ottawa intends to resume diplomatic relations with Iran.
However, Carney stated that “no discussions have taken place on this matter.”
