Trump's Renewed Attack On The Pope Over Opposition To War Against Iran

According to SAEDNEWS, citing The Hill, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the Catholic Church, and Brandon Johnson, the Mayor of Chicago, over their meeting at the Vatican, saying that someone should have explained to the Pope that the Mayor of Chicago is useless.

Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social: “Someone should explain to the Pope that the Mayor of Chicago is useless, and Iran should not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons!” He also reshared images of Johnson’s meeting with the Pope. In the images, the Mayor of Chicago is seen gifting a small flag of the city to the Pope, and both are holding a Chicago Cubs baseball cap, while Pope Leo XIV is known as a supporter of the White Sox team.

Trump’s remarks have added to his previous tensions with the Pope. The U.S. President had earlier also criticized the Pope’s comments regarding the war in Iran and his positions on immigration and social issues, saying that he does not want a Pope who believes Iran could obtain nuclear weapons. Trump had also criticized the Pope’s opposition to some U.S. government policies, including military and immigration actions.

In contrast, Pope Leo previously stated that he is not afraid of the Trump administration and will continue to speak openly about the Gospel message and humanitarian issues. His meeting with Brandon Johnson in the Vatican was mainly focused on issues such as social justice, immigration, support for vulnerable groups, and humanitarian cooperation.

The Mayor of Chicago also responded to Trump’s remarks, stating that Chicago residents are tired of Trump’s “war” against Iran and that his policies have made life more difficult for working-class families.
