Saed News: Shakira, who was accused of tax evasion by Spanish tax authorities in 2018, was finally cleared in the case after years of legal battles.
According to SAEDNEWS, Spanish authorities had claimed that she failed to fully pay her taxes between 2012 and 2014 and concealed her real place of residence. The Spanish government argued that she spent most of her time in the country and should have paid taxes as a resident citizen, but Shakira denied the accusations and stated that Spain was not her primary residence during those years.
After being accused in 2018 of evading millions of euros in taxes in Spain, the singer of the 2026 World Cup song is now emerging victorious from her legal battle.
On Monday, Reuters revealed that Shakira was not only officially cleared of tax evasion charges, but the court also ordered Spain to return the heavy 55 million euro fine (around 64 million dollars) imposed on her in 2021. In total, she will receive about 60 million euros (around 70 million dollars).
The superstar said in a statement: “There was never any fraud, and even the tax agency itself could never prove otherwise, because it was not true. Nevertheless, for nearly a decade I was treated like a guilty person, every stage of the case was leaked, distorted and exaggerated, and my name and public image were used to send a threatening message to other taxpayers.”
She continued: “After more than eight years of enduring ruthless public humiliation, organized campaigns to destroy my reputation, and countless sleepless nights that ultimately affected my health and my family’s peace, the National Court has finally clarified the truth. My greatest hope is that this ruling becomes a legal precedent for the tax agency and helps thousands of ordinary citizens who are pressured and destroyed every day by a system that assumes they are guilty from the beginning.”
