Side Effects of Using Ritalin Pills for Treating Hyperactivity in Children

According to SAEDNEWS, quoting Ninisite, Dr. Mohammad Hossein Soltanzadeh, pediatric specialist and professor at Shahid Beheshti University, said: Considering the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and its many side effects such as various forms of mistreatment and neglect toward the child, which ultimately lead to reduced self-esteem and self-confidence, it is necessary for these children and adolescents to receive treatment.

He continued: The best treatment for this disorder is the use of stimulant medications, one of the best types being Ritalin, which is also available in Iran. About 75 percent of children respond positively to this medication.

He stated: Usually, the first symptom to disappear with the use of Ritalin is the child’s hyperactivity, while the last symptom to improve is lack of attention and concentration.

He added: Initially, the medication is tested for two weeks, and if a positive response is observed and confirmed by the child, parents, and teachers, the medication is prescribed for a long period.

Soltanzadeh said: Since the half-life of the drug is short, it is prescribed in two or three doses. Taking this medication increases attention and concentration, resulting in improved learning, better academic performance (higher grades), and increased self-confidence in children and adolescents.

He said: Common side effects of Ritalin include loss of appetite, stomach pain, headache, and insomnia. Due to these side effects, drug holidays are considered by discontinuing the medication on weekends (Fridays), official holidays, Nowruz holidays, and sometimes during summer.

He emphasized in conclusion: Other treatment methods include behavioral therapy, education and counseling for parents, and group therapy for children and adolescents with hyperactivity.
