The combination of acetaminophen and acetylsalicylic acid is used to relieve mild to moderate pain caused by migraine headaches and to reduce fever. The caffeine in this product helps prevent dizziness and secondary complications of the common cold.
Caffeine is a mild central nervous system stimulant and causes constriction of cerebral blood vessels; this effect may help relieve headaches. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of this drug are related to acetaminophen and acetylsalicylic acid.
Caffeine is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Its plasma protein binding is low. It is metabolized in the liver and has a half-life of 3–4 hours. Acetaminophen and acetylsalicylic acid are also well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absorption of acetylsalicylic acid is reduced with food. Its half-life is about 15–20 minutes, and both drugs are metabolized in the liver. Acetaminophen is minimally bound to plasma proteins, while aspirin is highly protein-bound. Peak plasma concentration of aspirin occurs 1–2 hours after intake, and for acetaminophen about 0.5–2 hours after intake. All three components are excreted via the kidneys.
