He stated that the decision is driven by his desire to dedicate more time to the philanthropic foundation established by him and his wife, Melinda Gates.

For many years, he held the title of the richest person in the world. But how does this billionaire actually spend his fortune?
Bill and Melinda Gates have stated that it is not fair for them to be so wealthy. Gates, at age 64, has an estimated net worth of $98 billion, only a small portion of which is spent on luxury mansions, cars, and private jets. Instead of using billions for personal lifestyle, the couple directs a significant share of their wealth toward humanitarian causes through their foundation.
Gates’ fortune makes him the second richest person today. After donating a substantial portion of his wealth to charity, he passed the top position to Jeff Bezos, whose wealth exceeds $100 billion. If Gates were to spend $1 million every day, it would take approximately 245 years to exhaust his wealth.
The Microsoft co-founder has also made major investments across various sectors. One of his most notable initiatives is contributing $1 billion, alongside over 20 other wealthy individuals, to establish Breakthrough Energy, a private fund focused on promoting clean energy solutions.
In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Gates explained that when he became a billionaire at age 31—then the youngest in history—he did not engage in excessive spending. However, over time, he has purchased items such as private jets, including a Bombardier BD-700 Global Express capable of carrying 19 passengers.
Among his most remarkable assets is his mansion, Xanadu 2.0, located in Medina, Washington. Gates purchased the land in 1988 for $2 million. Construction of the 66,000-square-foot residence took seven years and cost $63 million. Today, the property is valued at approximately $125 million, with annual property taxes exceeding $1 million.
The house features a trampoline room—reportedly a favorite of his children—along with advanced technology systems. Computers throughout the home are worth around $80,000, and a $150,000 digital display system allows artwork to change with a simple touch.
Gates is also an art collector, owning valuable paintings, including a piece by Winslow Homer purchased in 1988 for $36 million. His estate includes a separate 3,900-square-foot building and a 60-foot swimming pool. The library, spanning 2,100 square feet, houses rare works such as a 16th-century manuscript by Leonardo da Vinci, which Gates bought at auction in 1994 for $30 million.
The mansion also features a private beach made with imported sand from the Caribbean, a 20-seat home theater, six kitchens, 24 bathrooms, and 23 garages—reflecting his passion for collecting luxury cars.
Gates has stated that his first major purchase after founding Microsoft was a Porsche 911. Although he later sold it, he continues to own other models such as a Porsche 959 and a Porsche Taycan.
Beyond Washington, Gates owns multiple properties. In Wellington, Florida, he has a 1.8-hectare estate with equestrian facilities, purchased partly due to his daughter Jennifer’s interest in horse riding. In California, he owns a 92-acre property with orchards, animal farms, and a racetrack, bought for $18 million. He also owns a 199-acre ranch in Wyoming valued at $8.9 million.
Through his investment firm Cascade, Gates holds stakes in various ventures, including partial ownership of The Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and nearly half of the Four Seasons hotel chain in partnership with Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. In 2013, he and his partners acquired the Ritz-Carlton hotel group for $161 million.
When not working or investing, Gates enjoys traveling. His destinations include Australia, Croatia, Brazil, and the Amazon. On one Mediterranean vacation, he rented a superyacht with a helicopter for $5 million per week.
He has also expressed interest in tennis and skiing, often attending major tennis events. Despite his wealth, Gates has said he does not enjoy shopping for himself, though he likes buying quality items for his wife. He also avoids excessive spending on clothing and jewelry.
