Lead: Daniel Jones silenced plenty of doubters in his first game as Indianapolis’ starter, delivering an efficient, put-together performance that helped the Colts score on every possession and roll to a 33-8 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

“You’ve Got to See This” — How Daniel Jones Tore Up Miami in Week 1

Former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones arrived in Indianapolis after a bumpy run in New York and a stop in Minnesota, and Sunday offered the clearest hint yet that the move could revive his career. The sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft showed up poised and precise, completing a large majority of his throws while adding key rushing scores — the kind of all-around day that has fans and teammates buzzing.

Jones’s stat line read like the sort of debut coaches dream about: sharp completion rate, steady yardage and scoring both through the air and on the ground. More important than any single number was the way he commanded the offense. The Colts became the first team since 1977 to score on every possession, a rare display of offensive control and consistency that erased any notion this was a fluke. Indianapolis finished with big numbers — moving the ball effectively and keeping Miami off balance — and Jones was at the center of it, finding his targets on rhythm throws and delivering clutch plays when drives needed to be sustained.

This game also carried emotional weight. Jones’s path from Duke to the NFL spotlight has had high points and low ones; after promising flashes with the Giants, things didn’t stick, and he ultimately parted ways with New York in 2024. A year in Minnesota followed, and arriving in Indy represented one more chance to stake a claim. On Sunday he delivered a performance that felt like redemption: steady leadership, fewer of the pre-snap miscues that shadowed him at times in the past, and the kind of decision-making that let the Colts impose their will.

Duke fans and those who watched him in college have long argued Jones had the tools — the arm, mobility and poise — to succeed at the next level. The Giants’ decision to take him highly in 2019 reflected that belief. What has been missing in some stretches was a clean environment, a supporting cast and play-calling tailored to his strengths. In Indianapolis, the early returns suggest a better fit: a coaching staff willing to play to his mobility and rhythm, reliable receiving options, and an offensive game plan that puts Jones in manageable, high-success situations.

Of course, a Week 1 win doesn’t determine a season. The NFL is a long grind, full of adjustments and tests. Still, there’s a reason teammates and coaches sounded upbeat after the game: when a quarterback can run an offense with the kind of efficiency Jones displayed — and do it in a way that looks repeatable — optimism spreads quickly through a locker room.

For now, Colts fans can enjoy the moment. Daniel Jones gave them reason to believe on Day One: a composed debut, a convincing team performance and a pathway to something more. Whether Indy becomes the place where Jones finally cements himself as a long-term starter will be decided over the next few months, but Sunday provided a welcome start.
