SAEDNEWS: The actor behind Charles Deetz in 1988’s ‘Beetlejuice’ does not join Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton in the sequel.
According to SAEDNEWS, The highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 1988 film Beetlejuice, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, has arrived in theaters, featuring some familiar faces. Michael Keaton reprises his role as the chaotic title character, while Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return as ghost-empath Lydia Deetz and her artsy stepmother Delia, respectively. However, one notable absence is Jeffrey Jones, who portrayed Charles Deetz in the original film.
Jones’s lack of participation in the sequel is primarily linked to his legal troubles. The actor, now 77, pleaded no contest in 2003 to charges related to possession of child pornography and had faced other legal issues over the years. Given this background, director Tim Burton and the film's stars have chosen to proceed without him, instead finding inventive ways to keep Charles Deetz's character relevant to the storyline.
In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the narrative cleverly addresses Charles’s absence. Early in the film, Delia shares the news of his demise with Lydia. Through a combination of narration and imaginative stop-motion animation, we learn that Charles tragically met his end during a bird-watching trip when his plane crashed into the ocean. In a macabre twist, a shark is depicted taking off his head and shoulders, leading to an unconventional funeral for the Deetz family.
Even though Charles has passed on, the quirky world of Beetlejuice doesn’t allow for a complete farewell. In a nod to the film's surreal humor, a body resembling Charles, complete with bite marks, can be seen in the afterlife, providing comic relief and a reminder of his character's significance. This character is voiced by an actor other than Jones, creatively integrating him into the storyline.
While some characters from the original film have not returned, the sequel embraces new talent alongside the returning cast. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who played the Maitlands, are also absent, having found a way to move on permanently as explained by Lydia in the new film. Their absence, along with Jones', raises questions about aging and the supernatural rules associated with ghostly characters.
The sequel brings in a range of new stars, adding excitement to the franchise. Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Danny DeVito, and Willem Dafoe join the ensemble, promising to introduce a new dimension to the already beloved storyline.
While the absence of Jeffrey Jones may be felt by some fans, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice finds creative ways to honor the original characters while moving forward with a fresh narrative. The film is currently playing in theaters, providing a nostalgic yet modern twist on the classic tale we all know and love.
