SAEDNEWS: The speaker of the Iranian parliament told the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Sunday that the IPU member states need to condemn the Israeli genocide in Gaza and create political pressure.
According to SAEDNEWS, In a significant meeting held on Sunday, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) members to take strong action regarding what he described as the genocide occurring in Gaza.
Meeting with Tulia Ackson, the President of the IPU, in Geneva, Ghalibaf stated, "Today, public opinion expects that IPU members have a clear and transparent position regarding the genocide that the Zionist regime is doing in Gaza and Lebanon."
He emphasized the need for IPU members to condemn these acts of violence, especially those targeting children and women. "IPU members should condemn genocide and crimes against children and women in particular and create political pressure to stop these crimes," he added.
Ghalibaf highlighted the importance of believing in peace to achieve it. He remarked, "When the Zionist regime, with the direct support of America in the region, violates all international and humanitarian laws and is proud of what it does, one cannot expect peace to be established."
He urged that discussions about Palestine should become a priority and proposed moving towards a resolution. "Today a good coordination has been established among the Arab, Islamic, and Asian countries, therefore with your coordination we can go towards the passing of this resolution in the current summit."
In response, Ackson noted that the IPU had shown solidarity with the Middle East by sending a delegation to the region last November, which included a visit to Palestine. She agreed with Ghalibaf about the importance of addressing unrest in Gaza and Lebanon.
"We have formed a committee in this union among world parliaments, especially for the Middle East, whose main responsibility was to ensure the establishment of peace in the region, but unfortunately, instead of that, we have seen an increase in tensions, and today we have asked for a report on this matter to be prepared," Ackson said.
She reaffirmed the commitment of IPU members against war and stressed that peace can only be achieved if countries believe in it and work towards it. "As parliamentary officials, we have potential that governments may not have, and we can also direct them towards establishing peace," she concluded.
