SAEDNEWS: The Canadian Foreign Minister has warned that all options are on the table in response to Donald Trump’s threats to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods.
According to SAEDNEWS, Mélanie Joly, Canada’s Foreign Minister, warned in an interview with CTV News—broadcast on Sunday, local time—that Canada will not hesitate to take retaliatory measures against Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Canadian goods.
According to Fars News, Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods once he takes office as the new U.S. president. He justified this decision by citing unresolved issues related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking in the United States.
In response to a question about whether Canada might cut energy exports to the U.S., Joly stated:
“Everything is on the table.”
She added that she, along with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, will meet with provincial premiers to discuss Canada’s response to Trump’s threat.
Joly emphasized that during her trip to Washington this week, she will present Canadian policy decisions regarding Trump’s threats to Republican representatives and U.S. policymakers.
She also called on all Canadian politicians to unite, stating:
“This is not a time for division or weakness. It is a time for strength and unity. Along with Dominic LeBlanc, I will lead Canada’s response to whatever the Americans decide to do.”
Local media reports indicate that Canada is preparing a list of American goods that may be subject to retaliatory tariff increases by the Canadian government.
