According to SAEDNEWS, In an electrifying start to the archery competition at Paris 2024, Lim Sihyeon shattered the world record with an astonishing score of 694 points in the recurve women’s qualifying round. Her remarkable achievement not only puts her on top of the leaderboard but also earns her Korean team a new Olympic record.

“It’s my first Olympics, so I wanted to give it everything,” Lim expressed after her performance. “I prepared for this moment, and I just tried to enjoy it. The results followed naturally.”

Lim’s score of 694 surpasses the previous world record of 692, set by fellow Korean archer Kang Chae Young at the Hyundai World Archery Championships in 2019. Additionally, it exceeds the Olympic record of 680, achieved by An San three years ago, by a notable 14 points.

With near-perfect weather conditions, Lim only dropped seven points over her first 36 arrows and appeared to be on track for an unprecedented 700-plus score in the 72-arrow round. Historically, only two male archers have ever broken that significant barrier.

“It wasn’t that I prepared differently,” she noted, reflecting on her success. “But the expectations surrounding this competition were definitely higher.”

As the most experienced archer on the Korean women’s team, Lim faced the weight of expectations heading into the Olympics. However, she rose to the occasion, delivering a stellar performance that set the tone for the event.

A breeze picked up after the halftime break, and while Lim couldn’t maintain her blistering early pace, her score solidified her status as a key contender. Her outstanding start is crucial for the Korean team as they seek to secure a 10th consecutive Olympic title in Paris.

“Qualification is just the beginning of everything,” Lim concluded. “Instead of feeling the pressure, I will focus on moving forward, one step at a time.”

Backing her up, Nam Suhyeon scored 688 to take second seed for Korea, while China’s Yang Xiaolei placed third with a score of 673. World number one Casey Kaufhold from the USA secured the fourth spot with 672. Personal bests were also recorded by Türkiye’s Elif Gokkir (671) and Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa (670), landing them in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

In contrast, reigning World Archery Champion Marie Horackova finished in 31st with a score of 651, while reigning European Games Champion Penny Healey found herself in 52nd place with 631.

The Korean, Chinese, Mexican, and Indian teams clinched the top four seeds in the recurve women’s team competition, earning byes directly into the quarterfinals.
