The Mysterious Fairy Chimneys of Zanjan: Stunning Photos of Nature’s Unusual Rock Formations

According to Saednews, Natural formations can vary greatly in size and height, ranging from the size of an average human to several dozen meters tall. In different parts of Iran, including Mahneshan County in Zanjan Province, a natural phenomenon known as the Fairy Chimneys can be observed. These formations are considered one of the region’s tourist attractions.

Location and Formation

The Fairy Chimneys are located approximately 20 kilometers from the city of Mahneshan and 120 kilometers from Zanjan. In geological terminology, these natural formations are called “hoodoos.” They are mushroom-shaped rock structures formed through erosion, resembling tall, slender towers with larger rocks balanced on top.

Hoodoos Around the World

Hoodoos are commonly found in the United States, particularly in Bryce Canyon, where photographs of these striking formations have become widely known. Similar natural structures have also been discovered in areas west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada.

These formations can also be found in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, where people live inside structures carved into the rock. Similar landscapes exist in Serbia and Taiwan. In the French Alps, these formations are known as “ladies with styled hair.”

There are also examples of hoodoos in the Vardij village area near Vardavard, close to Tehran. Due to their distinctive shapes and the erosion processes that created them, these structures are classified as hoodoos. However, in Zanjan, they are specifically known as “Fairy Chimneys.” The exact origin of this local name is unclear, although it may be connected to the ancient beliefs and traditions of the region’s inhabitants.
