What Is Omega 3 And What Are Its Health Benefits?

According to SAEDNEWS, Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of unsaturated fatty acids in which the first double bond is located between the third and fourth carbon atoms in the carbon chain. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for regulating human body functions; however, they cannot be produced by the human body.

Omega-3 consists of three fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in walnuts, chia seeds, some types of beans, vegetables, and oils such as soybean oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil, and olive oil. The other two fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are found in fish such as salmon, fish oil, and fish oil supplements.

ALA, EPA, and DHA all belong to the n-3 fatty acid family (unsaturated at the third carbon position), which are nutritionally important because they are all polyunsaturated fatty acids. The human body cannot produce n-3 fatty acids from other molecules and must obtain them through specific dietary sources.

The human body has a limited ability to convert the 18-carbon ALA chain into the 20-carbon EPA and 22-carbon DHA chains. Among plant-based foods, camelina oil and meal, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seed oils contain the highest amounts of omega-3.

Omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in physiological activities of the body due to their presence in cell membranes.

Benefits of Consuming Omega 3

In fact, few nutrients have been studied as extensively as omega-3 fatty acids.

Here are some of the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids:

1. Omega 3 May Help Fight Depression and Anxiety

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide.

Its symptoms include sadness, lethargy, and a loss of interest in life. Anxiety is also a very common disorder characterized by persistent worry and nervousness. Interestingly, studies have shown that people who regularly consume omega-3s are less likely to develop depression.

In addition, when people with depression or anxiety begin taking omega-3 supplements, their symptoms may improve.

There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids: ALA, EPA, and DHA. Among these three, EPA appears to be the most effective in fighting depression. One study even found that EPA was as effective as Prozac, an antidepressant medication, in reducing symptoms of depression.

Omega-3 supplements may help prevent and manage depression and anxiety. However, EPA appears to be the most beneficial type of omega-3 for combating depression.

2. Omega 3 May Improve Eye Health

DHA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid, is one of the main structural components of the brain and the retina of the eye.

When you do not get enough DHA, vision problems may occur. Interestingly, adequate omega-3 intake has been associated with a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of eye damage and blindness worldwide.

3. Omega 3 Supports Brain Health During Pregnancy and Early Life

Omega-3 is essential for brain growth and development in infants. DHA makes up 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain and 60% of those in the retina. Therefore, it is not surprising that infants fed DHA-enriched formulas have better vision compared with infants fed formulas without DHA.

Adequate omega-3 intake during pregnancy is associated with numerous benefits for the baby, including:

  • Higher intelligence

  • Better communication and social skills

  • Fewer behavioral problems

  • Reduced risk of developmental delays

  • Lower risk of ADHD, autism, and cerebral palsy

Getting enough omega-3 during pregnancy and early life is crucial for a child’s development. A deficiency may be linked to lower intelligence, impaired vision, and an increased risk of several health problems.

4. Omega 3 May Improve Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Heart attacks and strokes are the leading causes of death worldwide. Decades ago, researchers observed that fishing communities had much lower rates of these diseases. Later, it was discovered that this was partly due to their high intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

Since then, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to provide many benefits for heart health.

These benefits include:

  • Triglycerides: Omega-3s can significantly reduce triglyceride levels, usually by about 15–30%.

  • Blood pressure: Omega-3s may help lower blood pressure in people with hypertension.

  • HDL cholesterol: Omega-3s can increase levels of HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol).

  • Blood clots: Omega-3s can prevent blood platelets from clumping together, which helps reduce the formation of harmful blood clots.

  • Inflammation: Omega-3s can reduce the production of certain substances released during inflammatory responses.

For some people, omega-3s may also lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol). However, the evidence is mixed, and some studies have actually reported an increase in LDL levels.

Interestingly, despite all these beneficial effects on heart disease risk factors, there is no convincing evidence that omega-3 supplements can prevent heart attacks or strokes. Many studies have found no significant benefits.

Omega-3s have been shown to improve several risk factors associated with heart disease. However, omega-3 supplements do not appear to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes.

5. Omega 3 May Reduce ADHD Symptoms in Children

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.

Several studies have shown that children with ADHD have lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood compared with healthy children.

In addition, numerous studies have found that omega-3 supplements may help reduce ADHD symptoms. Omega-3s can improve attention and the ability to complete tasks. They may also reduce hyperactivity, impulsiveness, restlessness, and aggression.
