According to Saednews, Green bean gratin is a delicious dish that can be prepared quickly and easily. It is an excellent choice for a simple meal when you are short on time. Made with green beans, a creamy sauce, cheese, and toasted bread, this dish is baked in the oven until golden and crispy. In this article, you will learn how to make green bean gratin with a simple, easy-to-follow recipe. It can be served as an appetizer, a side dish, or a light main course.
Green beans: 500 g, preferably fresh and thin
Butter: 3 tablespoons
All-purpose flour: 3 tablespoons
Milk: 2 cups
Heavy cream: ½ cup (optional, for a richer flavor)
Garlic: 2 cloves, minced or grated
Pizza cheese: 1 cup, preferably a mixture of mozzarella and cheddar
Parmesan cheese: ¼ cup, grated
Toasted bread: 2–3 slices, cut into small pieces
Salt, black pepper, and paprika: to taste
Olive oil or extra butter: for greasing the baking dish
Wash the green beans and trim both ends. If they are long, cut them into two or three pieces.
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 3–5 minutes, until slightly tender but still crisp (al dente).
Drain the beans immediately and rinse them under cold water to stop the cooking process and preserve their bright green color. Set aside.

Melt the butter in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
Add the flour and stir continuously with a whisk or wooden spoon for 1–2 minutes, until the raw flour smell disappears and the mixture turns golden. This mixture is called a roux.
Gradually add the milk in several batches, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer until it thickens. Add the cream, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and a little paprika. Stir for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce is smooth and well combined.
Add the cooked green beans to the creamy sauce and gently stir until all the beans are evenly coated.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Lightly grease an ovenproof baking dish measuring approximately 20 × 20 cm (8 × 8 inches).
Transfer the green bean and sauce mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
Sprinkle the mozzarella-cheddar mixture and grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
Scatter the chopped toasted bread over the cheese layer to create a crispy, golden topping.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the top is golden brown and crispy.
Remove the gratin from the oven and let it rest at room temperature for 5–10 minutes. This helps it hold its shape when sliced.
Cut into equal portions and serve on individual plates. Green bean gratin makes a delicious appetizer or side dish and pairs well with grilled chicken, steak, or fish.

Use fresh green beans: Cook fresh beans briefly to keep them crisp. Frozen green beans can also be used; thaw them and drain off excess water before adding them to the sauce. They do not need to be blanched beforehand.
Make a thick sauce: The béchamel should not be too thin, as excess liquid can make the gratin soggy. If the sauce is runny, simmer it a little longer until it thickens.
Choose the right cheese: A combination of mozzarella for its stretchy texture and cheddar for its rich flavor works particularly well. Gouda or Gruyère are also excellent alternatives.
Add a finishing touch: Garnish the gratin with chopped parsley or a sprinkle of red pepper for extra color and flavor.
Enjoy your homemade green bean gratin!
