SAEDNEWS: Italian Angelica Bread is one of the most fragrant Italian breads, known for its distinctive flavor and beautiful appearance. This sweet, twisted, braided-style bread has a look reminiscent of rolled pastries, but it is lighter, more delicate, and wonderfully aromatic.

How to Make Angelica Bread, Italy’s Beloved Sweet Bread

According to Saednews, Angelica Bread is typically made with a rich brioche-style dough containing butter, eggs, and a little sugar. It is filled with sweet and aromatic ingredients, then twisted into a beautiful spiral shape before baking.

This bread is traditionally associated with the baking traditions of northern Italy. It is often said to have been named after a famous nun, Sorella Angelica, who was believed to have prepared the recipe in a convent.

Ingredients

Makes 1 medium loaf

For the Dough

  • 300 g white bread or pastry flour

  • 40 g sugar

  • 60 g softened butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 100 ml lukewarm milk

  • 7 g instant dry yeast

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • A little vanilla

For the Filling

  • 50 g softened butter

  • 50 g brown or white sugar

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

  • About ½ cup chocolate chips or dried fruit, such as raisins or dried cranberries

How to Make Italian Angelica Bread

1. Prepare the Dough

Mix the yeast with the lukewarm milk and a little sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until activated.

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and softened butter.

Add the flour, salt, and vanilla. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead until the dough becomes soft, smooth, and elastic, about 10 minutes.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

2. Prepare the Filling

Combine the softened butter, sugar, cinnamon, and your choice of chocolate chips or dried fruit.

3. Shape the Bread

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle.

Spread the filling evenly over the entire surface.

Roll the dough up tightly, similar to making cinnamon rolls. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll lengthwise down the middle so that the filling is visible.

Twist the two halves around each other to create a beautiful braided, spiral-like shape.

4. Second Rise and Baking

Place the shaped bread in a baking pan or on a baking sheet. Cover and let it rest for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Bake for approximately 30–35 minutes, or until the bread is beautifully golden brown.

5. Finishing and Serving

Once baked, dust the bread lightly with powdered sugar, or brush it with a simple sugar syrup made from water and sugar to give it a glossy finish.

Angelica Bread can be served either warm or at room temperature. It is especially delicious alongside tea or coffee.

Final Tips

For a slightly healthier version, replace part of the white flour with whole-wheat flour.
