SAEDNEWS: OpenAI has appointed former US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to its leadership team to strengthen the development of military applications of artificial intelligence and support the US strategy of using emerging technologies in geopolitical competition.

OpenAI Selects Former Army Chief to Lead US Military Artificial Intelligence Initiatives

According to Saednews, Driscoll will advise OpenAI’s leadership, government officials, and industry partners on integrating advanced artificial intelligence into national security, cybersecurity, and military strategies, particularly in the United States and its allied nations.

His appointment reflects the growing militarization of artificial intelligence, as major technology companies increasingly align their technological capabilities with Washington’s military objectives and strategic interests.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the appointment, stating: “AI should give people more power over their lives, and people should have a say in how it is developed.”

However, Driscoll’s new role signals an increasing focus on military applications of AI, raising concerns about technologies originally promoted for public benefit being repurposed as tools of military power and geopolitical competition.

Driscoll previously served as the 26th Secretary of the United States Army, overseeing military operations, modernization initiatives, and resource allocation.

His departure reportedly followed disagreements with War Secretary Pete Hegseth over Army leadership and modernization priorities.

“I’m joining OpenAI to help the United States and our allies put this technology to work responsibly, for the people who keep us safe,” Driscoll said.
