Araghchi: US Offer to Resume Talks Welcomed, but Iran Has No Immediate Plans for Meeting Americans

According to Saednews, In an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that US Vice President JD Vance’s letter had been discussed during senior-level meetings. However, he dismissed reports suggesting an imminent meeting between Iranian and American officials, describing them as speculation.

Araghchi characterized Washington’s effort to establish a wider channel for dialogue and mutual understanding as a constructive development. Nevertheless, he cautioned that the United States would repeat its previous mistakes if the initiative was intended to provoke tensions or deepen divisions.

“At this stage, we see no reason to meet with American officials. Our demands are clear, and mediators are continuing discussions on these matters,” Araghchi stated.

He also revealed that an Iranian delegation had visited Doha, while one of his aides remained in Qatar to pursue further consultations. He stressed that any decision regarding direct or indirect negotiations with Washington would depend entirely on whether the United States accepted Tehran’s conditions.

The Iranian foreign minister welcomed diplomatic initiatives by Qatar and Pakistan aimed at addressing Iran’s demands. These include the removal of sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets, a reduction in the US military presence across the region, and an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Regarding maritime security, Araghchi maintained that Iran’s proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz remained the only initiative currently under consideration. He added that mediators had also presented proposals concerning the nuclear issue, which Tehran was examining as part of the second stage of negotiations.

Explaining the proposed arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said Iran was seeking international recognition of a new shipping corridor developed in coordination with Oman, while other maritime routes would be closed.

Elsewhere in the interview, Araghchi warned that the possibility of renewed military confrontation could not be ruled out. He emphasized that Iran was prepared for every eventuality, noting that the country had modernized its military capabilities, tested new weapons systems, and placed its Armed Forces at the highest level of operational readiness.

Vance’s letter was delivered to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, through Qatari intermediaries on Sunday. Although its contents have not been officially disclosed, several US media organizations have reported that the correspondence outlined a proposed framework for direct negotiations.
