According to SaedNews: Senior US officials told Axios they believe Israel’s recent attack on the Abu al-Duhur military base in Syria was partly influenced by the Israeli elections scheduled for October.
The officials acknowledged that the government of Mohammed al-Julani had so far taken no hostile action against Israel and had spent recent months seeking a new security agreement to ease tensions along the border.
One US official said the Syrian government had spent weeks working toward an agreement between Washington and Israel that would establish a joint coordination center in Jordan to manage security incidents and prevent escalation. The proposed center was part of an arrangement under which both sides were supposed to “halt military activities.” Israel, however, declined to put the center into operation while increasing military operations in southern Syria.
Another US official said Damascus eventually changed course and concluded that it needed to defend itself against Israeli aggression.
US officials added that the Donald Trump administration had urged the Syrian government to remain restrained, arguing that addressing the issue would be easier after Israel’s elections.
