Trump Receives First Warning From China’s President; “There Will Be War If…”

According to SAEDNEWS, citing Fars News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push the two countries toward confrontation and even conflict, severely damaging China–U.S. relations.

According to Russia’s RIA Novosti, Xi Jinping warned that if the Taiwan issue is handled improperly, a conflict between the People’s Republic of China and the United States could occur, leading to a serious deterioration in bilateral relations.

The talks between the two leaders were held on Thursday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing as part of Trump’s official visit to China (May 13–15).

He emphasized that “Taiwan independence is incompatible with peace in Taiwan,” adding that properly handling the Taiwan issue would help maintain stable bilateral relations between China and the United States.

Beijing considers Taiwan an inseparable part of the People’s Republic of China and insists on the “One China principle” as a necessary condition for countries seeking diplomatic relations with it.

U.S. arms sales to Taiwan have long been one of the main sources of tension between Washington and Beijing. Formal relations between the Chinese central government and the island have been severed since 1949.
