Saed News: Some experts recommend reducing the consumption of caffeinated beverages during hot months and episodes of heat exhaustion because they believe caffeine contributes to dehydration. However, a nutrition specialist emphasizes that there are virtually no strictly prohibited foods or drinks in such conditions.

Is Caffeine The Body’s Enemy In Hot Weather?

According to SAEDNEWS, Dr. Abdolreza Norouzi, a nutrition specialist, explained that with rising temperatures and an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, heat exhaustion can be a serious condition that affects overall health.

He noted that excessive sweating in hot weather can worsen heat exhaustion. Common symptoms include nausea, weakness, extreme fatigue, heavy sweating, dizziness, and muscle cramps.

Discussing the dangers of heat exhaustion, Dr. Norouzi said that the primary concern is the loss of body fluids, followed by the depletion of minerals and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. Therefore, maintaining adequate fluid intake is essential.

He added that cool beverages are preferable because they help lower body temperature more quickly. Ideally, these fluids should contain substances such as salt and simple sugars to help restore the body's balance.

Should We Avoid Caffeine?

Some experts advise limiting or avoiding caffeinated drinks during hot weather and heat exhaustion due to concerns about dehydration. Addressing this recommendation, Dr. Norouzi stated that there are generally no foods or beverages that must be restricted specifically because of heat exhaustion.

He explained that caffeine is not considered a prohibited substance in these situations. Some people notice an increased urge to urinate after consuming tea, coffee, or other caffeinated drinks while recovering from heat exhaustion. However, according to him, this does not necessarily mean that caffeine is causing excessive fluid loss.

Instead, it may indicate that the body's hydration level has improved, blood flow to the kidneys has increased, and the kidneys are resuming their normal function.

Dr. Norouzi pointed out that the kidneys are among the organs most vulnerable during heat exhaustion, and consuming caffeinated beverages does not generally pose a problem.

He added that cool drinks are usually recommended, with water being the best option. Other choices include chilled soft drinks and water-rich fruits such as watermelon and cantaloupe.

Because body temperature rises during heat exhaustion, cold beverages can be especially helpful. Therefore, cooled tea and other chilled drinks can also be consumed without concern.
