According to SAEDNEWS, citing the Novosti news agency, Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of War, stated that Washington wants Ukraine to be able to defend itself and will therefore find a way to help the country. He made these remarks in response to a written request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the need to send new shipments of “Patriot” air defense missiles.

He said: “Wherever we could help Ukraine, we have done so. Wherever we could encourage Europe to do more, we have taken the necessary steps. We want them to be able to defend themselves, and we will find a way to help them.”

Hegseth also pointed to the increased financial support for Kyiv from European countries and explained that the reduction in missile deliveries is due to changes in production methods.

Yulia Mendel, the former spokesperson for the Ukrainian president, noted a day earlier that Zelensky’s letter to Donald Trump had put Washington in a difficult position. She wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Zelensky has rejected multiple peace proposals and managed to distance the U.S. administration from himself. However, he is now requesting more American missiles, placing Washington in a difficult position, because rejecting the request could make the U.S. appear as an unreliable ally.”

A few days earlier, Ukrainian media revealed that Zelensky had written to Trump and the U.S. Congress requesting an increase in air defense systems and missile supplies due to a growing shortage of equipment and ammunition.
