Located in the historic city of Shushtar, Salasel Castle is a sprawling fortress featuring multiple grand courtyards, barracks, stables, bathrooms, shabestans (underground chambers), towers, gardens, qourkhanehs (weapon storages), naqarehkhanehs (musical halls), harems, kitchens, large ponds, a fortified fence, and a protective moat.

In 2009, Salasel Castle was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list as part of the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, becoming Iran’s 10th cultural heritage site on the United Nations list under number 1315, alongside twelve other monuments.

Shushtar itself is an ancient city in Khuzestan province, located approximately 61 kilometers from Dezful, with roots tracing back to the Achaemenid era.
