Iran’s Response to the Threat of Assassination Against Araqchi and Qalibaf

Saturday, March 28, 2026

SAEDNEWS: Iran’s representative at the United Nations in New York, referring to efforts by the United States and Israel to assassinate the Speaker of Parliament and the Foreign Minister, emphasized that any policy aimed at normalizing the targeting of senior government officials is condemnable.

Iran’s Response to the Threat of Assassination Against Araqchi and Qalibaf

According to the Politics Service of Saed News, Amir Saeed Iravani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, in a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council regarding recent media speculations about assassination plans targeting Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, and Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, by the United States and the Israeli regime, stated that any premeditated policy to assassinate high-ranking officials of a sovereign member state constitutes a clear violation of the UN Charter.

The full text of the letter reads:

Following instructions from my government and in continuation of my previous communications regarding acts of aggression, war crimes, and terrorist actions committed by the United States and Israel against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran since February 28, 2026, I hereby draw your immediate attention, and that of the members of the Security Council, to reports published in the media.

These reports indicate that the United States and Israel have identified senior Iranian officials—including the Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi—as targets for assassination. The reports describe any suspension of such plans as merely temporary.

The media accounts reveal the existence of an operational framework targeting the assassination of Iran’s top political leaders. This policy has been actively pursued, particularly since the onset of acts of aggression against Iran on February 28, 2026, and has systematically included the assassination of the Supreme Leader and several other senior officials. Such a policy constitutes a clear breach of peremptory rules of international law. The conditional nature of the so-called “suspension” confirms that the threat remains real, deliberate, and ongoing.

Threats emerging from criminal mindsets that have openly dismissed the “rules of engagement” as “foolish” are deeply alarming. These actors, in coordination with the ruling terrorists in Tel Aviv, have deliberately bombed and killed hundreds of students, targeted hospitals, destroyed cultural heritage sites, and committed other heinous crimes. The promotion of so-called “hit lists” must therefore be regarded as another manifestation of the same terrorist acts that initiated a criminal war against Iran, which has so far resulted in over three thousand civilian deaths.

A premeditated policy to assassinate high-ranking officials of a sovereign member state of the United Nations constitutes a blatant violation of the UN Charter. Any such unlawful and cowardly action represents not only an act of terrorism but also a grave breach of international human rights law, including the right to life, and serious violations of international humanitarian law.

It must also be emphasized that officials at the level of foreign minister enjoy full personal immunity under customary international law, repeatedly confirmed by the International Court of Justice. Any action against their lives violates this personal immunity and undermines the foundations of peaceful international relations.

The letter continues: The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns any policy aimed at normalizing the assassination of senior state officials. Such a destructive and biased policy constitutes state terrorism, establishes a dangerous precedent, and signals a serious escalation threatening international peace and security. The United States and Israel bear full responsibility for these unlawful international acts.

Given the severity and consequences of these violations, which affect the fundamental principles of international law, the foundations of the international community, and the raison d’être of the United Nations, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls upon the Security Council to:

  • Explicitly and unambiguously condemn any threats or acts of assassination against government officials and leaders as a clear violation of international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights law;

  • Hold accountable those responsible for designing, authorizing, supporting, and carrying out such terrorist acts;

  • Require the United States and Israel to adhere to their binding obligations under the UN Charter and international law and to immediately cease all gross violations and unlawful actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

If these threats and grave violations remain unaddressed, a dangerously precedent-setting practice will emerge, undermining the foundations of international law and exposing all states to similar unlawful and destabilizing acts.

It would be appreciated if this correspondence were circulated as an official document of the Security Council and the General Assembly under agenda item 84, “The Rule of Law at National and International Levels.”
