7 Strategies to Maintain Mental Health During Wartime

According to Saed News Science and Technology Service, citing Fars News Agency, Raouf Pishdar, a university professor and journalist, explored strategies for maintaining mental and physical health during wartime in a recent commentary.

He writes: “The country is at war, many lives have been lost, and widespread damage has occurred. In such circumstances, society experiences deep grief alongside feelings of anger. These conditions can lead to psychological and emotional challenges. The question is: how can we manage emotions like grief and anger in ways that minimize harm to our mind, body, and spirit?”

Pishdar explains that his insights are based on an extensive conversation with artificial intelligence, drawing exclusively on expert perspectives. He notes that while it is natural for people to feel grief and anger under these pressures, managing these emotions is crucial for preserving mental and physical health.

He offers several strategies for coping:

1. Accept Your Emotions
Allow yourself to fully experience your feelings. Denying or suppressing them only intensifies the distress. Remind yourself that these emotions are natural in such circumstances.

2. Express Your Emotions
Communicate your feelings in healthy ways, such as talking with friends, family, or a mental health professional. Writing, drawing, or other artistic activities can also help articulate your emotions.

3. Practice Self-Care
Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and physical activity. Engage in activities that bring you joy—reading, listening to music, or spending time in nature can reduce stress and improve your mood.

4. Meditation and Mindfulness
Mindfulness and meditation exercises help you connect with your emotions in the present moment and accept them without judgment. These practices are effective in alleviating stress, anxiety, and anger.

5. Limit News Exposure
If following war news heightens negative emotions, reduce your consumption. Set specific times to catch up on news and dedicate the rest of your time to other activities.

6. Help Others
Supporting others can improve your own well-being. This can include volunteering, assisting friends or neighbors, or simply listening to someone’s concerns.

7. Seek Professional Help
If you feel unable to manage your emotions, consult a mental health professional. Psychologists or psychiatrists can help you better understand your feelings and develop healthier coping strategies.

Finally, remember that emotional recovery is a gradual process. Be patient and allow yourself the time to reach a more balanced and resilient state.
