Strange but True: Cats Sent to the Frontlines in the Ukraine War

According to Saed News’ society section, citing Hamshahri, the German newspaper Bild reports that Ukrainian army shelters and resting areas are increasingly encountering unexpected visitors. Multiple videos circulating on social media show mice and snakes, particularly in southern regions, invading bunkers—a problem that Russian soldiers likely have to contend with as well.

The issue isn’t just the presence of these critters. They disrupt soldiers’ sleep, gnaw on sleeping bags, and chew through anything they can get their teeth on, including military equipment.

To tackle the problem, Ukrainian soldiers have turned to cats, some of which are even brought directly to the front lines. One such cat, named “Shaibik,” was awarded a medal of honor for its “service to the army.”
