SAEDNEWS: The Wodaba Tribe in Africa: A Unique Society of Traditions and Customs

The Surprising Story of Men Who Wear Makeup to Attract Women (+Photos)

According to Saed News’ Social Affairs service, citing Etemad Online, the Wodaabe tribe in Africa is renowned for its distinctive customs and traditions.

Egypt’s Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper reported that this tribe, considered one of the world’s most unusual, resides in Chad, and some of their traditions are strange, even startling.

Among the Wodaabe, men wear makeup, don their finest clothes, and meticulously style their hair—a role traditionally expected of women. Yet, in this tribe, men perform all these rituals to attract a life partner.

Once a year, the tribe hosts a festival famously known as the “Gerewol Festival” or “wife-stealing festival.” During the event, men wear their best attire and perform a series of traditional dances to capture the attention of women in the tribe.

To enhance their appearance, men adorn their hair with bird feathers, wear tall hats to appear taller, shave their foreheads, braid the back of their hair, and often decorate it with colorful beads.

According to tribal custom, during the festival, women are allowed to leave their current husbands and choose the man who has won their favor, meaning men in this tribe may have multiple wives.
