SAEDNEWS: Evidence Shows Saudi Arabia Has Launched Ambitious 170-Kilometer ‘Line’ City Project Near the Red Sea
According to the technology section of SaedNews, Saudi Arabia’s “Linear City,” or The Line, is one of the most ambitious urban projects in the world. Stretching 170 kilometers across the Tabuk Province, this city is designed without cars, streets, or pollution, and is set to host millions of residents by 2030.
Project Overview
The Line is part of the larger NEOM initiative, introduced in January 2021 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aiming to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and create a more diversified economy. Geographically, the city is situated in Tabuk Province, near the Gulf of Aqaba.
Design Features
Length: 170 kilometers
Width: just 200 meters
Height: approximately 500 meters (two parallel glass towers)
Projected Population: 9 million people
The city is designed with no streets or cars. Transportation will rely on ultra-fast, automated systems. Its structure is vertical and layered, meaning residential, commercial, educational, and recreational spaces are stacked to minimize land use.
Goals and Innovations
Full Sustainability: 100% renewable energy, innovative waste and water management.
Zero Carbon Emissions: A city built without pollution using green technologies.
Rapid Transit: Travel from one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes.
Smart Living: Integration of AI, the Internet of Things, and cutting-edge technologies for urban management.
Global Significance
The Line is positioned not only as a milestone for Saudi Arabia but also as a model for the future of urban civilization worldwide. Many consider it the largest urban experiment in history—a fusion of futuristic architecture, green technology, and intelligent management. Despite criticisms labeling it as overly promotional or unrealistic, construction is underway, with portions of its public transit system expected to open by 2026.
