The Timeless Windmills of Nashtifan, Iran

Nashtifan is home to some of the largest collections of clay, mud, and wooden windmills from the Safavid period, as well as the oldest and largest collection of mills in the world.

The durability of these windmills owes itself to the powerful 120-day winds of Sistan and Balouchestan province. Among the most significant and impressive cultural structures in the Nishtefan area, these windmills stand as iconic symbols of the region’s heritage.

The Nashtifan mills are historical and technological monuments that date back more than a thousand years. As major tourist attractions in Khorasan Razavi, they draw hundreds of international visitors and thousands of domestic tourists every year.

Historically, windmills were primarily used to grind wheat into flour, but they also served other purposes, such as pumping water. While the exact date of their construction remains unknown, their enduring presence continues to captivate historians and travelers alike.
