More than 1.2 million households and 3.6 million people have been impacted by floods triggered by heavy rains across 12 southern provinces, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported Friday.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat told a Bangkok news conference that flooding has claimed 145 lives in eight provinces, with Songkhla province hit hardest, recording at least 110 deaths.

He added that search and rescue efforts have improved as floodwaters began to recede.

The death toll in Songkhla province surged after the waters started to subside, as rescuers gained better access to neighborhoods previously submerged and recovered more bodies, particularly in Hat Yai, the region’s largest city.

According to the AP, the floods caused widespread disruption, leaving thousands stranded, rendering streets impassable, and submerging low-rise buildings and vehicles.
