Iran Expresses Solidarity with Bangladesh Amid Recent Turmoil

According to SAEDNEWS, Nasser Kanaani expressed his condolences on Monday night to the families of the victims and the injured following the recent events in Bangladesh. He emphasized that "the Islamic Republic of Iran will always remain a good and reliable friend to the people of Bangladesh."

In his statement, Kanaani highlighted the deep-rooted and historical ties between Tehran and Dhaka, reaffirming Iran's commitment to its amicable relations with Bangladesh. In these critical times, he reassured that Iran stands alongside this brotherly nation, stating, "Iran will always remain a good and reliable friend for the people of Bangladesh."

The Iranian spokesperson also expressed hope for the restoration of peace and stability in Bangladesh, advocating for the rule of law, unity, and cohesion among the people, along with prudent actions from the nation's leadership.

The unrest in Bangladesh escalated last month following a High Court ruling that reinstated a law reserving over 50% of coveted civil service positions for a specific group, including the descendants of those who fought for the country’s independence from Pakistan in the 1970s.

The protests have resulted in hundreds of fatalities, thousands of injuries, and the detention of numerous individuals, including several opposition political figures. Violent clashes between anti- and pro-job reservation demonstrators, along with police confrontations, have marked the ongoing unrest.

The protesters, primarily composed of college and university students, are demanding the government annul the court ruling and adhere to the existing merit-based employment system. The weeks of intense demonstrations have compelled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to seek refuge abroad; she arrived at Hindon Air Base in India and is expected to travel next to London.
