Vank Cathedral of Isfahan: A Treasure of Religious Paintings in the Heart of Jolfa

According to Saednews, It is impossible to speak about the religious attractions of “Half of the World” (Isfahan) without mentioning the Vank Cathedral. Located in the Armenian quarter of Julfa, Vank Cathedral is a fascinating museum of murals and painted panels that, one by one, narrate stories from the Bible. If you are planning to visit Julfa and wish to wander through the painted ceilings and walls of Vank, this article is worth your attention.

Introduction to Vank Cathedral in Julfa

Vank Cathedral, located in the Julfa district of Isfahan, is considered the largest and most famous church in Iran. It was built by Armenian immigrants during the reign of Shah Abbas II of the Safavid era and gradually developed into its present form.

Vank is one of the 13 remaining churches in the Armenian neighborhood of Julfa and continues to hold great importance for Christians. It is also known as “Amenaprkich” and “Holy Savior.” Today, it stands as one of the most popular historical monuments in Iran, attracting numerous visitors every year—including tourists who travel to Isfahan from other cities.

History and Construction of Vank Cathedral

The construction of Vank Cathedral dates back to around 1606, initiated under Shah Abbas II in cooperation with the Armenians of Julfa. Initially, the site consisted of a small church located southwest of the present structure, known as the Hakop Church.

About fifty years after the completion of the Hakop Church, construction of a new building began. The name “Vank” was inspired by a church of the same name in Nakhchivan, Armenia.

This cathedral is renowned for its extraordinary architecture and richly colored paintings. Vank was registered as a national heritage site in 1931 and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Iran.

Exterior Beauty of Vank Cathedral

Vank Cathedral is built on a land area of approximately 8,700 square meters. Unlike many historical churches that use stone for their façades, Vank features a brick exterior.

Its large wooden entrance door opens into the main complex. Above the entrance, colorful and detailed paintings can be seen. On both sides of the entrance, there are rooms originally built for hosting guests, which are now used as guard rooms.

Unlike many churches with conical domes, Vank has two layered domes above the main hall and sanctuary. Around the dome, eight large windows provide natural light. The church has a square plan influenced by Safavid-era mosque architecture.

The ceilings and walls are covered with some of the most stunning religious paintings in the entire complex.

Murals of Vank Cathedral

Whether you are an art lover or not, the murals of Vank Cathedral immediately capture attention. These paintings are executed on fabric, stone, wood, canvas, and plaster, covering almost every part of the church.

Their themes mainly depict the life of Jesus Christ—from birth to ascension—as well as biblical stories and representations of heaven and hell.

Fabric Paintings

Some of the artworks found in the altar area and other parts of Vank Cathedral are painted on fabric. These works often illustrate stories from the Bible and are spread throughout different corners of the church, creating a vibrant and immersive spiritual atmosphere.

Wall and Ceiling Paintings

The colorful murals covering the walls and ceilings depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, including his birth, crucifixion, and the Last Supper. The dome paintings also illustrate stories such as Adam and Eve, the forbidden fruit, and the story of Cain and Abel.
