Saed News: Australian researchers say that positive travel experiences—by placing people in new environments, increasing physical activity, social interaction, and creating positive emotions—can help maintain physical and mental health and slow down the aging process.
According to SAEDNEWS, most people turn to anti-aging creams to fight skin wrinkles, but researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia say there is a more effective and enjoyable way to achieve this goal: traveling.
In a study published in 2024, researchers showed that positive travel experiences may help improve physical and mental health and slow some signs of aging. The study presents travel as more than just a simple form of rest.
Fangli Hu, a PhD student at Edith Cowan University, says: “Aging is irreversible. It cannot be stopped, but it can be slowed down.”
According to her, travel improves health in several ways: it places people in new environments, encourages physical movement, increases social interaction, and creates positive emotions.
Travel therapy can become a powerful tool for maintaining health. Positive travel experiences may benefit the body in four ways:
Physical activity: Walking, hiking, cycling, and other travel activities increase metabolism and improve blood circulation.
Stress reduction: New and relaxing environments help reduce chronic stress and balance the immune system.
Immune strengthening: New experiences stimulate and strengthen the body’s defense system.
Tissue repair: Beneficial hormones for tissue repair may be released during enjoyable trips.
Hu explains that participating in these activities can strengthen the immune system and make it more resistant to external threats.
Travel is not always beneficial for health. Tourists may face infectious diseases, accidents, unhealthy food, or other risks. Hu mentions the COVID-19 pandemic as a clear example.
The important point is that not every trip delays aging; rather, positive travel experiences—combining novelty, relaxation, physical activity, and social connection—help the body and mind function better.
Safe, relaxing, and physically active trips do more than create memories; they can contribute to healthier and higher-quality aging.
