Discovery Of A Huge Underground City By Archaeologists

According to SAEDNEWS, citing Bitote, archaeologists in Turkey have reported the discovery of a huge underground city. So far, only 3% of this city has been excavated, but rooms, corridors, secret passages, and historical artifacts have already been found. Archaeologists believe this may be the largest underground city in the world.

According to Daily Sabah, the discovery was made in the “Midyat” region of Mardin province, an area rich in history and culture.

Underground City

This underground city, known as the “City of Caves,” was discovered by accident during cleaning and restoration work on historic houses and streets in Midyat. Workers were cleaning a cave when they came across a passageway. Continued excavation led to the discovery of multiple rooms, connecting corridors, and wall paintings.

So far, archaeologists have uncovered 49 rooms, including spaces for worship, water wells, grain storage areas, as well as several passages and corridors.

Underground City

According to one archaeologist, this underground city was continuously used for 1,900 years and was built as a hidden shelter or refuge in times of danger. At the time, Christianity was not the official religion in the 2nd century, and groups and families who adopted it often took refuge in underground cities. The Midyat underground city is likely one of such settlements built for this purpose.

Underground City

Archaeologists estimate that at least 60,000 to 70,000 people may have lived in this underground city.
