SAEDNEWS: An Iranian lawmaker says parliament would unanimously support reviewing the country's continued membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if such a proposal is put forward.
According to Saednews, Former Iranian Foreign Minister and lawmaker Manouchehr Mottaki said Sunday night that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had become a tool for exerting pressure on Iran, despite Tehran’s responses to questions regarding its nuclear activities. He criticized the agency for failing to meet its expected obligations toward the country.
Addressing growing calls within Iran for withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Mottaki noted that Iran had been a member of the treaty for more than five decades but had received only limited benefits from its provisions.
He added that members of parliament receive approximately 200 text messages daily urging Iran to leave the NPT, noting that the proposal has also gained support among sections of the public.
Mottaki said he believed the time had come to seriously consider withdrawing from the treaty. However, he emphasized that the final decision rests with Iran’s Commander-in-Chief, the Supreme Leader.
