SAEDNEWS: Haaretz has warned that the West Bank is facing an explosive situation as settler violence rises and the Israeli military struggles to contain attacks. The newspaper says concerns over political consequences and military careers have contributed to commanders’ reluctance to take decisive action.
According to SaedNews: An Israeli newspaper warned Friday that the West Bank is effectively a powder keg that could explode at any moment, pointing to a sharp rise in settler violence and growing difficulties for Israeli military commanders in confronting it.
Haaretz reported that continued settler attacks have placed the Israeli military under severe pressure. With the army facing a serious manpower shortage and multiple fronts, it is increasingly unable to respond to all incidents and attacks involving settlers, creating a significant security vacuum across parts of the West Bank.
The report also highlighted what it described as contradictory conduct by senior military commanders, arguing that their behavior reflects an inability to confront settlers. According to Haaretz, a state of “paralysis” has taken hold among commanders because they fear decisive action against settlers could be interpreted as politically motivated and damage their military careers.
Officers being considered for promotion are reportedly avoiding forceful measures against settlers because of concerns about the effect on their future positions. The newspaper said this has effectively constrained the military’s response while allowing a growing climate of lawlessness to develop in the West Bank.
Haaretz stressed that the volatile situation is not confined to recent settler attacks in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus. Instead, it said the entire West Bank faces the risk of a broader eruption.
The newspaper concluded that rising settler attacks, the Israeli army’s weakening capacity and its inability to maintain control have created a dangerous equation that could turn into a large-scale explosion at any moment.
