SAEDNEWS: A US Democratic senator, responding to reports that Trump has backed down from threats against Iran’s infrastructure, emphasized that Washington should never have initiated a war with Iran in the first place.
According to Saed News’ political service, citing Fars News Agency, Senator Ed Markey reacted on Wednesday to former President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of threats against Iran’s infrastructure and people, and the announcement of a ceasefire. Markey wrote, “I am glad to hear about the ceasefire agreement with Iran, but in any case, we should never have been involved in this illegal war.”
The Democratic senator emphasized that Trump committed war crimes in the conflict with Iran, adding, “Donald Trump cannot simply threaten war crimes and then avoid accountability. Congress must convene immediately to end this war and remove Donald Trump from office.”
Following these developments, the U.S. president announced early Wednesday a two-week ceasefire with the Islamic Republic of Iran, in response to Tehran’s warnings.
Trump, citing unfounded claims, stated that attacks on Iran’s energy plants and infrastructure would be postponed for another two weeks. Accepting Iran’s 10-point plan, he added, “Almost all of the previous points of disagreement between the United States and Iran have been agreed upon, but a two-week period allows finalization and completion of the agreement. On behalf of the United States, as president, and representing Middle Eastern nations, it is an honor to see this long-standing issue on the verge of resolution.”
The Islamic Republic of Iran has clearly warned that in the event of an attack on its power plants, it will not only fully close the Strait of Hormuz but also consider attacks on Israeli power plants and power facilities of all countries hosting U.S. bases in the region as legitimate targets.
