Iran’s Letter to the UN Security Council Following Trump’s Open Military Threat

According to the Political Desk of Saed News, Amir Saeid Iravani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and to Abubakar Dahir Osman, President of the UN Security Council, regarding recent threats made by Donald Trump, President of the United States.

The letter states: Pursuant to instructions received from my government, and further to our previous letters dated 30 December 2025 as well as 2, 9, 13, and 22 January 2026 concerning the deliberate interference of the United States in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its continued threats to use force, the present correspondence is submitted to once again and urgently draw the attention of Your Excellency and the members of the Security Council to yet another clear and public threat of the use of force and military attack by the President of the United States. In public remarks, he has explicitly threatened the Islamic Republic of Iran with military action. In a message posted on the social media platform Truth Social on 28 January 2026, the President of the United States stated: “A massive ship is moving toward Iran. It is moving fast, with power, motivation, and clear purpose. This fleet, larger than the one sent to Venezuela, is led by the massive aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. Just as happened with Venezuela, this fleet is ready, willing, and able to swiftly and violently carry out its mission if necessary. Time is running out; time is truly critical! As I have said before to Iran, they must reach a deal! They did not, and they were met with ‘Operation Midnight Hammer,’ an operation that resulted in the widespread destruction of Iran. The next attack will be much worse!”

The letter further states that such remarks and language constitute a clear and explicit threat to the use of force against a sovereign Member State of the United Nations and represent a grave violation of the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran firmly rejects and condemns such war-mongering statements, which are irresponsible, provocative, and manifestly contrary to the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter. The threat to use force against an independent state constitutes a blatant violation of Article 2, paragraph 4, of the UN Charter, which explicitly and unequivocally prohibits both the use of force and the threat of its use against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

Iran’s representative added that these statements are unfortunately not unprecedented, but rather form part of a broader and well-documented pattern of pressure, intimidation, destabilizing actions, covert intelligence operations, and unlawful measures by the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Such conduct exacerbates regional tensions, increases the risk of miscalculation, and poses a direct threat to international peace and security.

The letter emphasizes that the Islamic Republic of Iran remains fully committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Iran explicitly and unequivocally reaffirms its inherent right to self-defense in accordance with international law and declares that, in the event of any armed attack or act of aggression, it will exercise its right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and people. Full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences of such actions would rest with the United States of America.

The letter further states that, in light of the persistent and serious violations of the UN Charter and international law by the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran once again calls upon the Secretary-General and the responsible members of the Security Council, within the framework of their Charter-mandated authority, to categorically reject any use of force or threat of the use of force by the United States against Iran.

Finally, the Islamic Republic of Iran urges the Secretary-General and the responsible members of the Security Council to remind the United States, as a permanent member of the Security Council, of its binding obligations under the UN Charter and of the grave consequences of any military aggression, and to take the necessary measures to halt all threats, coercive actions, unlawful measures, and destabilizing activities against the Islamic Republic of Iran, all of which constitute clear and ongoing violations of the purposes and principles of the Charter.
