SAEDNEWS: Germany’s Chief of Defense, Gen. Carsten Breuer, has been elected as the next chair of NATO’s Military Committee, the committee’s current chair, Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, announced Saturday.
According to Saednews, NATO has elected General Carsten Breuer, Chief of Defense of the German Armed Forces, as the next Chair of the NATO Military Committee, with his term set to begin in July 2027.
The current committee chair, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, announced Breuer’s election in a post on X, according to Anadolu Agency.
Cavo Dragone said Breuer would officially assume the position in July 2027, praising his operational experience, knowledge of NATO and leadership of Germany’s armed forces.
“Your operational judgement, your deep familiarity with this Alliance and your leadership of the German Armed Forces will serve NATO well,” Cavo Dragone said.
He added that NATO’s chiefs of defense had chosen to place their confidence in Breuer at a challenging time for Euro-Atlantic security.
Cavo Dragone also said Breuer would receive the full support of the NATO Military Committee and the International Military Staff during the transition period. He said he looked forward to working with Breuer until the formal handover.
The NATO Military Committee serves as the alliance’s highest military authority. It provides military advice to NATO’s political decision-making bodies and plays a key role in translating political decisions into military guidance.
The committee’s chair is NATO’s most senior military official and serves as the principal military adviser to the NATO Secretary General.
Cavo Dragone has held the position of Chair of the NATO Military Committee since January 2025.
