SAEDNEWS: Over the past week, an elderly couple who have shared more than seven decades of married life celebrated their wedding anniversary.
According to SaedNews social service, the ceremony was held in a nursing home, and the surprising detail was that the 91-year-old Leonard’s wife, who had been suffering from illness, briefly recovered during the celebration and was able to recognize Leonard—although only temporarily.
The couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary at a large senior care center in Burlington, Colorado.
Leonard, 91, and Shirley Mattis have been holding hands for more than seven decades, and their anniversary this year was celebrated more magnificently than ever before. Audrey Behrendson, a nursing specialist at the elderly care center, shared photos of the couple on Facebook and said: “I have worked in elder care since I was 16. Working with elderly people has always taught me many lessons. But what I experienced today during my career was the most beautiful moment.”
One of the couple’s seven children, Caroline Martel, said the family had been planning a simple anniversary party, but it turned into something far beyond that. When a staff member brought Shirley in her wheelchair toward her husband, her expression suddenly changed from the confusion caused by severe Alzheimer’s, and she recognized her husband after a long time.
It was one of the most beautiful moments of the anniversary celebration. Martel added that her mother suffers from dementia and has not been able to recognize those around her for years, but on that day she had no difficulty recognizing the love of her life.
