A Glimpse at Soraya’s Stunning Jewelry: From Iconic Wedding Rings to Ruby and Sapphire Brooches, the Pahlavi Family’s Extravagance Knew No Bounds

According to the History and Culture Service of Saed News, Soraya was the wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi from January 1951 to the end of March 1958 and became known as “the queen with emerald eyes.” She spent her childhood in Europe before returning to Isfahan. Soraya’s selection as the Shah’s wife was made by his elder sister, Shams. During an important gathering at the Iranian Embassy in London, where Soraya was also invited, Shams was immediately taken with her and discussed the matter with Soraya’s father, Khalil Khan Esfandiari. After his divorce from Fawzia, the Shah needed to remarry.

Soraya married the Shah shortly after their first meeting, at the age of 18, and received a stunning diamond from Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Her wedding dress was designed by Christian Dior, but it was so heavy and elaborate that Soraya could barely move. The gown incorporated 20 meters of white silk and was adorned with jewels, including gold, weighing more than 30 kilograms in total.

Everything in their personal life seemed perfect—except for one thing: children. With the death of Alireza, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s full brother, the Pahlavi dynasty faced the prospect of having no heirs. This tragedy ultimately led to the end of Soraya and Mohammad Reza’s marriage.

Soraya’s jewelry was equally remarkable. One notable piece was a yellow gold brooch set with rubies, sapphires, and diamonds.

Her engagement ring is considered one of the most famous of modern history. The ring featured an extraordinary 22.37-carat emerald-cut diamond set in a platinum band, crafted by Harry Winston. On either side of the emerald-cut diamond were two tapered baguette-cut diamonds.

The Shah also gifted Soraya a dazzling diamond necklace, completing her collection of unforgettable royal jewels.
