SAEDNEWS: Tehran Means 'Warm Slope,' in Contrast to Shemiran, the 'Cold Slope
According to the Saed News community portal, Tehran means “warm slope,” in contrast to Shemran or Shemiran, which means “cold slope.” Prefixes such as teh, jeh, and qah indicate warmth, as seen in names like Tehran, Jahrom, and Qahavand. On the other hand, shim, sem, and zem denote cold, as in Shemran, Semirum, zemestan (winter), and zamin (earth). These prefixes are no longer in common use; many old Persian prefixes and suffixes have been forgotten, such as a in Amordad and Anushirvan.
Some scholars suggest that Tehran is a transformed version of Tehram, meaning a warm region, in contrast to Shemiram or Shemiran, a colder area. Others believe that the vast plain now known as Greater Tehran appeared as a hollow amid the surrounding mountains, and for this reason, it was called “Teh Ran” — literally, the “hollow of the slope.”
