What Is The Consequence Of Someone Who Does Not Perform Prayer?

What Is the Punishment for Abandoning Prayer?

Prayer is one of the most important obligations in Islam, emphasized greatly, and those who abandon it are promised punishment. Prayer is a mandatory and essential part of the religion, and neglecting it is considered a major sin. Its importance is such that the acceptance of all a person's deeds depends on the acceptance of their prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The first thing a servant’s deeds are looked at on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is accepted, then his other deeds are considered; but if it is not accepted, then none of his deeds are considered.”

Importance of Prayer

In the Holy Quran, which contains guidance and instructions for a happy life, there is one verse about Khums (a type of tax), 13 about fasting, 18 about Hajj (pilgrimage), and 23 about Zakat (charity), but over 122 verses have been revealed concerning prayer, highlighting its importance, rulings, and significant matters.

  • Desire to show off and hypocrisy

  • Carelessness and negligence (despite having proper physical and mental condition)

What Are the Effects of Abandoning Prayer?

Neglecting prayer or not fulfilling its conditions properly or abandoning it entirely not only brings evil effects in worldly life but also undoubtedly has severe consequences in the Hereafter.

Hell is the Reward for Those Who Abandon Prayer
“In Gardens [of Paradise] they will ask each other about the criminals: ‘What put you into Saqar (Hellfire)?’ They will say: ‘We were not of those who prayed.’”
These verses briefly describe the condition of the companions of the right hand and their opposite group. They confess to several major sins, one of which is abandoning prayer. Since prayer is worship of God, it is impossible without faith in Him. Therefore, mentioning it symbolizes faith and submission to God’s command.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Do not neglect your prayer, for whoever neglects it will be raised with Qarun and Haman, and God has the right to cast him with the hypocrites into Hell. Woe to the one who does not protect his prayer.”

Abandoning Prayer Is a Major Sin

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
The major sins listed by Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) are seven: disbelief in God, killing a human, being ungrateful to parents, taking usury, unjustly consuming an orphan’s wealth, fleeing from jihad, and apostasy after migration.
Ubaid said: I asked the Imam: Which is greater, consuming an orphan’s wealth or abandoning prayer? He said: Abandoning prayer. I said: You did not count abandoning prayer among major sins. He replied: What was the first thing I told you among major sins? I said: Disbelief in God. He said: Surely, the one who abandons prayer is a disbeliever.

Being Deprived of Intercession

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
“Our intercession will not reach the one who belittles his prayer.”

Being Deprived of Islam’s Blessings

Being Distant from God’s and His Prophet’s Protection

Abandoning Prayer Leads to Dying a Non-Muslim

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

Whoever abandons prayer, not fearing its punishment nor hoping for its reward, it is as if they died a Jew, Christian, or Zoroastrian.

“Whoever deliberately abandons his prayer has committed disbelief.”
