According to Saed News, citing Fararu, a family in Brisbane was shocked when they went to their kitchen pantry to get some ingredients. Among the table salt and pasta, they discovered a large python.

The incident was shared on the social media accounts of North Brisbane Snake Services, which had visited the home a few days earlier. The posts included images of the snake coiled across several shelves. Its body was supported by multiple food packages, while its head rested casually on a lid. The post briefly identified the snake as a coastal carpet python, scientifically known as Morelia spilota mcdowelli.

The post also noted that this species is non-venomous and was found in a home in Joyner, a suburb of Morton near Brisbane.

Coastal carpet pythons are native to Oceania and can be found from northern Queensland down to northeastern New South Wales. They adapt well to various habitats and can be seen on tree branches, under trees, and in more open areas. In gardens, they are often spotted among piles of building materials or garden debris.

These snakes also favor ground-level habitats, including exposed beams on verandas, sheds, and garages. More concerning, they can sometimes be found overwintering in attics and within house walls.

Coastal carpet pythons have been recorded across all suburbs of Greater Brisbane but seem to prefer leafy neighborhoods over urban environments. Overall, they are among the most commonly encountered snakes in the region.
