Syria Seeks Membership in BRICS Group

According to SAEDNEWS, Syria is looking to become a member of BRICS, the group of emerging economies, according to Bashar Jaafari, Syria’s ambassador to Russia.

“We are very interested in joining BRICS. We have sent written requests to join the organization," Jaafari told TASS at a conference titled North Caucasus: New Geostrategic Opportunities.

The BRICS group has recently made headlines by welcoming five new developing nations as it kicks off 2024. This expansion includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia—marking the first major addition since South Africa joined over ten years ago.

Last year marked significant growth for the BRICS alliance, which fast-tracked various initiatives, including plans to reduce reliance on the dollar and its first-ever expansion effort. The recent addition of new members could have profound geopolitical impacts, as BRICS aims to strengthen its influence in a multipolar world.

As Syria applies for membership, it joins a growing list of nations interested in aligning with the BRICS economic alliance.
