Qatar Sounds Alarm Over Potential Iran Conflicts Threatening Regional Stability

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, discussed the country’s diplomatic approach in the region and concerns over Iran’s nuclear program, warning that any escalation with Tehran could have far-reaching consequences for neighboring nations.

Al Thani explained that Qatar’s ties with Hamas began 13 years ago at the request of the United States. While the country has faced criticism for hosting the movement, he emphasized that Qatar’s support is intended for the people of Gaza, not Hamas itself, and dismissed claims that it provides financial aid to the group as baseless. He highlighted that Qatar’s engagement has facilitated ceasefires and prisoner releases, underscoring that lasting regional peace depends on cooperation from all parties.

The minister also addressed persistent misinformation campaigns targeting Qatar, affirming the nation’s commitment to resolving conflicts through diplomacy. While Qatar supports the Palestinian people, he noted, it does not fund reconstruction of areas destroyed by others. He stressed that Gaza’s residents wish to remain on their land and that any breach of agreements risks renewed conflict.

On broader regional issues, Al Thani criticized diplomatic efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program as inadequate, warning that any conflict involving Iran would have serious repercussions for neighboring countries.

Finally, he expressed hope that U.S. efforts could help resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which he described as detrimental to Europe.
