IAEA Chief Hopes to Visit Iran: What’s Holding Up the Trip?

In a press conference following his speech at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting on Monday, Director General Rafael Grossi expressed hope to visit Iran once a framework for cooperation is established, though no specific date has been set.

Grossi emphasized that the IAEA does not share information on any country’s nuclear program, responding to Iran’s accusations that his reports contributed to the June attacks on its nuclear sites by the United States and Israel.

Addressing concerns over the “snapback” of UN sanctions by three European states, Grossi insisted that the agency’s actions are separate and unrelated. He also refrained from condemning the June US-Israeli strikes, despite the heavy retaliation Iran reportedly dealt to the aggressors.

Looking ahead, Grossi voiced optimism that an agreement with Iran could resume inspections soon, suggesting that renewed oversight might prevent future attacks. He further highlighted Iran’s continued participation in the NPT and noted progress in ongoing talks aimed at establishing a new cooperation framework.

The IAEA chief concluded by reiterating his earlier remarks to the Board, expressing hope that the upcoming days will yield concrete results in stabilizing the strained relations between the agency and Tehran.
