SAEDNEWS: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi took a swipe at the US for embracing “hegemony through force,” destabilizing the region and enabling Israeli actions against Iran, and called for renewed commitment to a truly law-based international order.
The Institute for Political and International Studies, affiliated with Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted a conference in Tehran on November 16 titled “International Law under Assault, Aggression and Defense.”
Addressing the conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi warned that international law is under unprecedented attack, with revisionist powers—particularly the US and its allies—undermining the post-World War II legal order. He criticized the global shift from a law-based to a selectively applied “rules-based” system, which he said serves Western self-interest and US supremacy.
Araqchi highlighted that repeated warnings from international leaders and Global South nations have been ignored, and that the world is witnessing attempts to impose a “force-based international order.” He called West Asia the region most affected, accusing Israel of acting as an extension of US power and committing attacks, occupations, and crimes under the guise of expanding “Greater Israel.”
He condemned Israeli strikes on Iran and other regional countries as blatant violations of international law and the UN Charter, noting US involvement in escalating these actions.
The foreign minister framed the current global situation as a choice between a militarized, hegemonic system and a law-based international order rooted in universality, equality, dialogue, and collective peace. Iran, he said, supports the latter and is ready to collaborate with the Global South to restore a rules-based world order.
